Onyx has a long history of use in hard stone carving and jewelry, where it is usually carved as cabochon or in the form of beads. It has also been used for intaglio engraved gems and hardstone cameos, where the bands make the image contrast with the background. Onyx was often used for sculptures and decorative pieces created between the 1920s and 1970s.
