Description

French school; third quarter of the 19th century. "Scottish hunter". Patinated and partially gilded bronze. Measurements: 34 x 17 x 35 cm. In this sculpture of round bulk the artist presents us the figure of a man sitting on a stump next to two hunting dogs that watch him attentively. The young man has a bow with arrows on his back, indicating that he is a hunter, although it is true that his melancholic posture distances the sculptural group from the usual activity of a hunting scene. The author thus recreates a scene of historicist character where the protagonism is given to the hunter's clothing. The work has its roots in the animalistic sculptural current that emerged in 19th century France, specifically in the genre of hunting representation, very much to the taste of the bourgeois clientele of the time. They were pieces of great naturalism and detail, generally small and medium-sized works cast in bronze.
