Foi um “homem que pinta”, uma vez que não gostava de ser apelidado como pintor e poeta. Apologista de vanguardas, aproximou-se do neorrealismo na década de 40, ao mesmo tempo que, se afasta e, adere aos princípios do movimento surrealista. Fez parte do Grupo Surrealista de Lisboa e participou na primeira exposição do grupo em 1949. Em 1950, integrou a Marinha Mercante, tendo viajado por África, Índia e Ásia. Fixou a sua residência em Angola, em 1951, onde começou a produzir poesia. Em 1964 empreendeu uma viagem pela Europa, como fuga às conturbações da guerra colonial, onde teve contacto com os membros do movimento surrealista a nível internacional. Recebeu uma bolsa da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian em 1967 e a partir da década de 1980, radicou-se no Algarve e começou a diversificar as suas atividades, tornou-se programador de galerias e colaborador de revistas internacionais ligadas ao surrealismo, sendo que também produziu escultura e objetos de autor.
