The photographs show Eretz Israel gliders, training sessions and preparations for flights, gliders in flight, early Eretz Israel aviators (some images show aviators wearing rare early emblems of Eretz Israel aviation, e.g. pilot wings of the Aviron aviation company), military drills, Haganah paramilitary fighters, Notrim (pre-state Jewish policemen), views of Eretz Israel and more. Dimensions 5x8cm to 13x20cm. Most of the photos are attached to photo-album pages. Also included is an extremely rare Glider Pilot Certification Card granted to Miryam Meyerstein by the Eretz Israel Aviation Club, dated 1939 and numbered 26 (damages). (See also lot 485 in this auction.) Arthur Meyerstein (1908-1964) was one of the founders of Eretz Israel aviation and one of the first flight instructors in pre-state Israel. His wife Miryam (1912-2005) was one of the first two women glider pilots in Eretz Israel. Arthur was born in Breslau, Germany, where he learnt to pilot glider airplanes and became a senior instructor. He made Aliyah in 1935 and immediately initiated activities on behalf of the local aviation industry, including founding the Haifa branch of the Eretz Israel Aviation Club. There he met Miryam, who had made Aliyah from Turkey in 1929. Arthur and Miryam were active as glider pilots and instructors, in parallel to being members of the pre-state paramilitary Haganah organization. In early 1948 Arthur designed and constructed the airstrips in Nahariya and Metzuba in northern Israel. After the founding of the state he served in various engineering roles related to the founding of the IAF and its airstrips.
