Memorable facts from French history. Memorable facts in French history. Watilliaux. Paris (circa 1900). Wood-cardboard box, size 38 x 30 x 4.5 cm. Two-tone lithograph on the lid (Lith. E. Neveu after a drawing by B. Coudert): François 1er is knighted by Bayard after the battle of Marignan (1515). The interior is divided into four compartments and contains: eighteen game cards, oblong format 24.4 x 13.8 cm / a bag containing 90 cardboard discs, 3.8 cm in diameter / a wicker basket with bone pieces / a paperback booklet (13.5 x 21 cm), 92-40 pp. Historical precis for the game Les faits mémorables de l'Histoire de France. Historical lotto game published by Watilliaux. The eighteen illustrated boards - lithographs after Ferdinand Bastin - offer a pictorial panorama of French history, from Gaul to the defeat at Sedan. Each card (numbered from 1 to 18), devoted to a specific period, follows the same pattern: at the top, the designation of the period and the name of the king(s), surmounted by a large central scene representative of the period (Coronation of Charlemagne, Battle of Rocroi, Abdication of Napoleon I...); on either side of the illustration, two cartouches with dated facts. There are thus five episodes inscribed on each card, each marked with a sign inscribed in a circle. Each of these episodes is inscribed on one of the cardboard discs pulled from the bag. A fine copy of this educational game, complete with its booklet commenting on the major historical facts presented in the game; at the end of the booklet is an interesting 40-page catalog of Watilliaux's productions.
