MONUMENTAL JAPANESE INCENSE BURNER, MEIJI Richly chased patinated bronze This incense burner is composed of a lid surmounted by a protective samurai; the body decorated with two medallions representing on one side a samurai scene and on the other, sacred birds surrounded by two dragon handles; resting on a double-strut base with arched feet decorated with Fo dogs. Stamped on the base of the body and on the pedestal. Meiji period, 19th century H: 155 cm ; Diam: 47 cm Provenance: Luxembourg private collection This incense burner is a refined bronze artefact made in Japan and intended for export to Europe and the USA, where such objects were highly prized and consistently displayed in the Japanese pavilions of world's fairs held in major cities.
