Note: Rare early cast of this sculpture, of which another is numbered XXII. Venus victrix illustrates the triumph of the goddess of love over her rivals, Minerva and Juno. She holds the apple given to her by the shepherd Pâris, the sole judge of this beauty contest. The antiquisant style echoes Renoir's later style. Like Maillol, Bourdelle and Picasso at the same time, he turned to the Greco-Roman model in what came to be known as "the return to style", combining realism and idealism.
