German school, late 18th century, The Annunciation and the Meeting at the Porte Dorée, Oil on wood, pair of fir panels parqueted with an altarpiece, painted in the style of 15th-century altarpieces, over an undercoat of white paint, presented in a 19th-century frame. Dimensions: 22.5 x 27.5 cm per panel, + frame 37x56cm, traces of old pitting in the wood. The Annunciation refers to the Angel's announcement to Mary of her maternity. The Meeting at the Golden Gate is an account of the Virgin Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, meeting at the Golden Gate in Jerusalem, upon learning that she was to bear a child. Provenance: Near Lake Constance, Germany.
