This painting is a replica of "Saint Jerome writing the Vulgate" by José Gutiérrez de la Vega preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville. Saint Jerome appears half-naked, writing the Vulgate while he thoughtfully observes the carving of the Crucifixion. On the table, the skull, a symbol of penitence along with the crucifix.
