Description

Viceregal School, Virgen de la Soledad, Colonial work of the Cuzco school of the 17th century Oil on canvas, measurements: 85 x 63 cm, frame measurements 100 x 75 cm. The present work can be considered a representation made by an anonymous New Spain, made between 1620 and 1630, of the dedication of the Virgin of Solitude, whose devotion was taken to the New World by the order of the Servites. Its festival dates back to 1413, in Cologne, when it replaced the celebration of the Virgin of Pasmo - whose iconography sparked controversy when theologians saw her syncope or fainting as not in keeping with Mary - and thus counteracted the iconoclastic movement of the followers of John Huss. . The cult and celebration spread throughout the Ancien Regime throughout Europe and Latin America. Provenance: important private collection, property of an important collector, Spain. Reference bibliography: RODRÍGUEZ G. de CEBALLOS, A., “Ascetic literature and Christian rhetoric reflected in the art of the Modern Age”, Art History Readings. Ephialte. (1990), pp. 80-90
