Carved walnut chest with nativity scenes belonging to the "RIEDMATTEN" family Switzerland, Canton du Valay, late 16th-early 17th century Walnut wood Original locks Height: 80 cm; Width: 166 cm; Depth: 62 cm Abundant ornamentation exalts in this Swiss Renaissance chest of harmonious proportions and generous decoration. The front is adorned with three panels framed by four caryatids with youthful features, sheathed in pilasters with interlacing motifs. Two Holy Conversations frame the central panel. The central panel is adorned with a coat of arms featuring a three-leaf clover surmounted by two stars, revealing the coat of arms of the "RIEDMATTEN" family of the Saint Gingolph branch. On either side of the coat-of-arms is an elaborate rocaille. Above, a young woman, once holding a shamrock, reigns over an openwork fire pot in the round, surmounted by a flame, a motif appearing as early as the end of the 16th century.
