Monumental María Magdalena next to Mary before Christ recumbent, Baltasar de Echave Ibía (ca. 1558 - ca. 1623), Mexican colonial school of the Echaves of the 17th century, Viceroyalty of New Spain, present-day Mexico Large oil on canvas. Measurements: 240 x 145 cm. Baltasar de Echave Ibía Baltazar or Baltasar de Echave Ibía (Mexico City, New Spain, 1583-84?-1644) was a New Spain painter. The second member of the Echave family, called “the Echave of the blues” due to his chromatic use of his palette loaded with that color or "the young man." Born in New Spain within the Echave family, son of Baltasar de Echave Orio and Isabel de Ibia, born probably between 1583 and 1584. Brother of Manuel Echave Ibia and father of Baltasar de Echave Rioja. In 1623 he married Ana Rioja. The work of this painter prior to 1625 is unknown. In 1634 he participated in the work on the altarpieces of the Third Order chapel in the Temple of San Francisco de México. Investigations have involved the participation of Echave Ibía.
