Description

The Sacrifice of Isaac, Roman or Neapolitan Master of the Roman school of Pompeo Batoni or Luca Giordano, active in Italy in the 17th - 18th centuries Large oil on canvas. Measurements: 215 x 162 cm. Framed measurements: 223 x 170 cm. The present composition, the work of a Roman or Neapolitan master active at the end of the 17th century, reproduces the passage of biblical exegesis that shows us as an example the submission of Abraham to the will of God, a central question for both Judaism and Islam. (with an important difference: the scene is presented as starring Ishmael and not Isaac); while from the point of view of Christianity, the prefiguration of Christ's sacrifice is added to this aspect. Among the homilies on liturgical readings of the Catholic mass, it is that of Tuesday V of Ordinary Time. The place of sacrifice, Mount Moriah, is identified, along with Mount Zion, with the space later known as the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem. Also from a moral point of view, the moment before the attempted execution is considered as a suspension of the moral order by God. Provenance: important Andalusian private collection, Sevillian palace, Seville, Andalusia, Spain.
