STAR LOT - NAO DE MANILA, 16TH CENTURY, Fine and Extraordinary Filipino Lacquer, Coral and Wood portable Triptych for Export to the New Spanish colonial Market, Mexico Discovered recently on a distinguished private Spanish collection, this magnificent triptych from the Nao de Manila presents an outstanding state of preservation given its dating, with a golden Philippine lacquer cover and interior in tropical wood and coral carved with a fineness that escapes words, primitive colonial work of Chinese artisans from Macao in the colonial Philippines for New Spain. There are two examples of smaller works preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the British Museum in London, among others. Open triptych measures: 15 x 17 x 2 cm. Size when closed: 15 x 9 x 2.5 cm. Similar works held at: Victoria & Albert Museum, inventory number: 226-1866; Metropolitan Museum of New York: inventory number: 10.141.2; and finally, another example conserved in the British Museum, inventory number 1889,0507.7, to highlight, another Philippine triptych auctioned at Cabral Moncada Leiloes of Portugal, Auction July 5, 2021, Lot 300. This lot has export permit valid and can be shipped both within and outside the EU.
