PETER GHYCZY (Budapest, 1940 - The Netherlands, 2022) for Reuter Products. "Garden Egg Chair, 1960s. Polyurethane and fabric upholstery. In good condition with signs of use and age. Repaired hinge. Measurements: 98 x 84 x 74 cm. The Garden Egg Chair was designed for both indoors and outdoors, although, as a design icon and collector's item, it is rarely used outdoors. It was one of the first chairs made of polyurethane, as well as one of the forerunners in the use of hinges. It appears in several motion pictures. Its appearance reflects the aesthetic patterns of the time: the Space Age look (name given to the period in which the space race was launched, starting in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik. This fever to conquer space also reached design, and during the sixties and seventies a decoration model was developed based on an idyllic vision of the future, and everything to do with spaceships, new technologies and innovative materials), brightly colored plastic lacquer, portability and informality of the low seat. Peter Ghyczy is one of many 20th century designers who were also immigrants - among them Henry van de Velde, Marcel Breuer, Hans Gugelot, Peter Maly... and who had a great impact on German and international design. He completed his secondary education in Germany, studying sculpture in Düsseldorf before training in architecture at the Technical University of Aachen in 1960, specializing in construction engineering. During his studies, Ghyczy worked as an assistant to the renowned German architect Rudolf Steinbach (1903-1966) and on projects in Paris and Egypt. In 1968 he took up a position at Elastogran in Lemförde in southern Lower Saxony, where he was responsible for the development of polyurethane products. He also worked for Vitra.

Artist's note: proper name Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi, Scottish graphic artist and sculptor (1924 Leith - 2005 London), son of Italian immigrants, 1945-47 studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, went to Paris for two years in 1947 and briefly studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Art, from 1949 lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and from 1955-1958 he taught sculpture at Martin's School of Art, from 1952 member of the Independent Group, 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977 participation in the documenten in Kassel, 1960 participation in the XXX. Biennale in Venice, 1960-62 visiting professor at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts, 1968 solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, from 1979 member of the Royal Academy of Arts, 1981 to 1989 professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, 1989 knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, 1994 exhibition in the Yorckshire Sculpture Park, 1994 acquisition of a large part of his work by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, 2001 stroke and as a result confined to a wheelchair. Artist information: German painter and restorer (1911 Freiburg im Breisgau - 2009 ibid.) completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, 1929 studied painting at the Badische Landeskunstschule in Karlsruhe under Georg Scholz, also attended the etching class under Walter Conz, 1932/33 master student with his own studio under Hermann Goebel, however he cancelled his master student status for political reasons, then at the Munich Art Academy under Julius Hess, acquired his master's certificate in 1940, immediately before his military service, he processed what he had experienced during the war in many sketches and then worked as a freelancer in Freiburg-Zähringen, 1960/69 chairman of the South Baden Association of Fine Arts, alternating with sculptor Walter Schelenz, worked until 2001.
