ORDER OF MALTA. Fine quality knight's sword of the Spanish Order of Malta. Finely chased gilt brass mounting. Pommel decorated with trophies of arms. Spindle bearing the Spanish coat of arms and a lion. Keyboard enriched with foliage (a little missing), adorned with a silver Maltese cross (white enamel remnant). Straight blade, with back and central flat spot, engraved "FAD TOLEDO 1855". Later leather scabbard with two gilded brass fittings. A.B.E. circa 1855. Of fine quality

First edition illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Vertot, 4 title vignettes, 5 fold-out maps, a plan of Rhodes and 70 hors-texte portraits. At the end of volumes 3 & 4, there is a list of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, classified by region and country, a dissertation on the government of the Order of Malta, and the old and new statutes of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. A highly critical and accurate work, the most important on the subject. (Quérard X, 128; Brunet V, 1149.) A very fine copy in large paper.
