He joined the Accademia Pontaniana, gathered around the humanist Giovanni Pontano, taking the classicizing pseudonym of Actius Syncerus. He soon became famous as a poet and was received at court, obtaining Villa Mergellina, near Naples, as a country residence from Frederick of Aragon. When his patron Frederick was forced to take refuge in France in 1501 he was accompanied by Sannazaro, who did not return to Italy until the king's death (1504).
