Asia - TRUONG VINH KY (Jean-Baptiste Petrus). Abrégé de grammaire annamite. Saïgon, Imprimerie Impériale, 1867. In-8, 131 pp; red half-chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). First edition, printed in Saigon. A professor of oriental languages and editor of Giadinh, the first Vietnamese newspaper, Truong Vinh Ky is the author of numerous translations and several works: Petit dictionnaire français-annamite (1884), Cours d'histoire annamite (1875-1877), Histoire de la Chine (1875) and Grammaire de la langue annamite (1883). In addition to technical and synthetic grammar, these works provide information on the ancient history of the Annamite language, which was spoken throughout the Annam Empire, as well as in the Kingdom of Siam, Cambodia and Laos. A fine copy with a handwritten note (unidentified signature) "Ouvrage de mon ami Truon Vin-Ky un annamite des plus remarquables par sa connaissance en langues anciennes et modernes Saïgon 1870" and a short biographical note on the author photocopied from "En Indochine 1894-1895" by Count de Barthélémy.
