Paris, Par la Compagnie des Libraires Associés, 1773. 6 vol. in-8, marbled basane, ornate ribbed spine, title and tom. pages in red and green marble, marbled edges (period binding). Covers and corners worn, leather missing in places, spines rubbed and cracked. This celebrated edition by Bret features a frontispiece portrait engraved by Cathelin after Mignard, 6 title finials and 33 out-of-text figures engraved by the finest artists of the period after Moreau. This copy has double pagination 66-67 and 80-81 of T.1, as do the best copies according to Tchemerzine and Cohen. "Remarkable for its beauty" Cohen. Margins of endpapers browned, otherwise very good condition inside. (Cohen, 716-719; Brunet, III, 1798-1799; Tchemerzine VIII, 360.)
