CHINA - 1760-1850 Cylindrical snuff bottle in ivory carved with the eight horses of King Mu in a landscape Red coral stopper (corallium rubrum) H. 8 cm Weight : 46,60 g Note: - China has a long tradition of ivory carving. Initially appreciated by the court, these objects were manufactured for export from the 19th century onwards. They are meticulously carved and illustrate major themes in the Chinese decorative repertoire. Easy to carve, ivory can be used to make small utilitarian objects such as the one shown here. Provenance : - Jutheau sale, April 19, 1991, lot 140 and reproduced in the catalog. A CIC will be given to the buyer.
