"Christ Leaving the Praetorium" after Gustave Doré The scene shows the moment after the interrogation by Pontius Pilate and the condemnation to death by the people of Jerusalem, when Jesus leaves the praetorium and walks towards an executioner's servant, Gustave Doré (1832-1883) created the present motif in 1867 as part of a series of magnificent biblical illustrations that cemented Doré's fame as an artist, slightly impasto copy in slightly different colours to Doré's original, oil on canvas, 19th cent. Century, unsigned, loosely mounted on plywood panel, unsigned, craquelure, mainly shortened at the top, in need of restoration, framed, rebate dimensions approx. 26 x 43 cm.
