Marchis, physicist and professor at the Paris Faculty of Science, was the first holder of the chair of aeronautics at the Sorbonne. The work is taken from one of the lectures the author used to give: it presents a history of air navigation, both for heavier-than-air and lighter-than-air aircraft. Richly illustrated with reproductions of photographs, drawings and sketches. Particularly noteworthy are the five fold-out color plates at the end of the book, depicting Blériot's monoplane, the biplanes of Voisin and the Wright brothers, the Zeppelin and the Parseval. They provide a detailed look at the design of these early flying machines. A rare work in this condition.
