Snuff bottle; Beijing, China, Qing dynasty, nineteenth century. Glass. Presents a later period lid. Measurements: 6.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 cm. This type of snuff box became widespread from the seventeenth century to store snuff type tobacco introduced by the Portuguese throughout the previous century. Tobacco became widespread in China among the upper classes as a medicine for a wide range of ailments: asthma, throat ailments and the evil eye. As it became a fashion, small containers were created and were the object of profuse ornamentation, becoming, in some cases, true works of art. It has a later period cover.

A PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE WITH AUSPICIOUS FLOWERS A PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE WITH AUSPICIOUS FLOWERS China, 20th century. Of flattened globular form, rising from an oval foot to a waisted neck with flat mouth, painted with a continuous scene of peonies, chrysanthemums, and other auspicious flowers on a black ground, with a lappet border and a band of scrolls around the neck. Provenance: From the Dorf private collection. In 1975, Ted Dorf received a cinnabar snuff bottle from a family member, sparking a lifelong interest for collecting these portable treasures. The Dorfs were also active in the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society and enjoyed collecting other forms of Chinese art as well, in addition traveling the globe and visiting museums. The Dorfs met at Temple University, and both held long careers in radio and broadcasting, serving on numerous company boards, truly sharing all aspects of their life with great passion. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minor nibbling to the mouth and light surface scratches.
