Cocoon - Vase - China, probably Han period, ceramic, cross-bellied vase with flaring lip and foot rim, cocoon form, cold-painted in pink, white and black, with vertical stripes and swirls, chipped, loss of color, signs of age, with certificate of purchase from Hong Kong dated 1972, h approx. 24 cm Info: The Han dynasty, China's second imperial dynasty, which lasted from 206 BC until its end 400-odd years later in 220, is still regarded as the golden age in Chinese history. To this day, China's majority ethnic group still refers to themselves as "Han people" and the Chinese script is known as "Han characters". These vases were used as storage vessels in tombs for wine and other liquids and were ultimately intended for use in the afterlife as a symbol of wealth and status.
