Peter Steinfort, attr., female nude with red hair dressing, seated lady in an interior, glazed painting, oil on canvas and stretcher, c. 1970, monogrammed "P.St." lower left, inscribed "Peter Steinforth" on the reverse of the canvas and label with information on the artist on the stretcher, small holes in the canvas, somewhat in need of restoration, unframed, dimensions approx. 80 x 60.5 cm. Artist info: German painter and graphic artist (1923 Berlin - 1981 Darmstadt), initially graduated from high school in Cologne, then military service and prisoner of war in WW2, from 1945 studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. From 1945 he studied at the Berlin Academy under Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Cuno Fischer and Max Kaus, where he also maintained contact with Carl Hofer, co-founder of the Berlin artists' group "Der Igel", 1953-56 study visit to Altea in Spain with a scholarship from the Berlin Senate, here acquaintance with Eberhard Schlotter, active in Darmstadt from 1956, took over a municipal studio here in 1960, member of the West German Artists' Association and the Darmstadt Secession, honoured with the Gario Prize of the City of Berlin in 1953 and the Art Prize of the City of Darmstadt in 1958, source: Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon" and Wikipedia.

Emma Ritter. 1878 Vechta - 1972 Oldenburg. Lake in the mountains. 1928. oil on hardboard, monogrammed ER lower left, 27.5 x 31.5 cm, dated verso, framed behind glass 56 x 59.5 cm, unopened - Provenance: Kunsthandel Gerd Pleus, Oldenburg - Ritter studied under Lovis Corinth, among others, and maintained contact with the representatives of the Berliner Brücke, whom she had met in Dangast, throughout her life. She was particularly close friends with Lyonel Feininger and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and moved into Schmidt-Rottluff's Berlin studio when he was called up for military service. In 1923 she returned to Oldenburg for family reasons and remained there until 1939. In 1943, back in Berlin, her previous work was almost completely destroyed by a bomb. The present painting is thus a very rare example of the work of a German Expressionist who has remained relatively unknown.
