Prof. Illies, Arthur - 1870 Hamburg - 1953 Lüneburg; German painter and graphic artist; pupil of Heinrich Ehrich; 1889-90 studied at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts under Ludwig Leeker; from 1890 at the Munich Academy under J. Herterich; 1892 returned to Hamburg and became a member of the association "Die jungen Hamburger"; 1895-1908 teacher at the Valeska Röver painting school; from 1908 prof. at the Landeskunsthochschule Hamburg; important representative of Art Nouveau and was considered a brilliant graphic artist around 1900: "Frauenschuh" (1897), lilies in Art Nouveau style, etching in brown on Japan laid paper, here in a later print from around 1970 (Edition Griffelkunst Hamburg), stamped on verso "Arthur Illies - Nachlass", plate approx. 22 x 12.5cm, minimal creases, unframed (sheet size approx. 34.5 x 26cm)
