Scheits, S. M. - Matthias Scheits ca. 1625/30 - Hamburg - ca. 1700. Matthias Scheits, artistically socialized in the Netherlands, continued to orientate himself towards Dutch genre painting after his return to Hamburg. He captured scenes of peasant life reminiscent of David Teniers and Adriaen von Ostade. The scene shown here was painted in 1695, a few years before Scheit's death, and is thus the latest version of the subject in his oeuvre - he had already created two drawings on this theme in 1675 (Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kupferstichkabinett, inv. no. 29446 and Albertina, Vienna, inv. no. 3686), which correspond compositionally to the painting; another version of the painting is also in Hamburg (Hamburger Kunsthalle, inv. no. 253).
