Kienmayer was an Austrian portrait painter and illustrator as well as an orientalist, in 1916 he was accepted as a war painter into the art group of the k.u.k. He was stationed in Suta near Muereasca and in Bukovina, among other places; most of the works from this creative period are now in the Museum of Military History in Vienna; he was last active in Leipzig and Baden-Baden; in Leipzig he was appointed professor of art; from 1929 he traveled to Java, Bali and Indonesia; motifs from this period, such as landscapes, temple and genre scenes, can be found today in numerous art auctions and are privately owned.
