Kienmayer, Fr. - Franz, Kienmayer, 1886 Vienna - 1963 Baden-Baden, "Kameltreiber", oil/canvas, three-quarter portrait of an Oriental in side view, monochrome, white background, impasto application of paint, broad brushstroke, signed and dated 1924 lower right, inscribed 'Jerusalem', titled lower left, 44.5x35.5cm frame behind glass minimally bumped, approx. 50.5x42cm. Kienmayer was an Austrian portrait painter and illustrator as well as an orientalist, in 1916 he was accepted as a war painter into the art group of the k.u.k. He was stationed in Suta near Muereasca and in Bukovina, among other places; most of the works from this creative period are now in the Museum of Military History in Vienna; he was last active in Leipzig and Baden-Baden; in Leipzig he was appointed professor of art; from 1929 he traveled to Java, Bali and Indonesia; motifs from this period, such as landscapes, temple and genre scenes, can be found today in numerous art auctions and are privately owned.
