Emil Esche initially trained as a decorative painter, after which he studied at the Augsburg Werkkunstschule under Karl Rupflin, then at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich under Franz Klemmer, from 1923 Esche worked full-time as a painter in Augsburg and ran a studio from 1930.
