PUNU, Gabon. Wood, dark patina, pigments. A rare and beautifully crafted ancient mask of the "Ikwara" type, known as the "black mask" or "mask of the night". Worn by a dancer on short stilts, it was only used at nightfall during dances organized by judges or notables for difficult palavers. 1st half of the 20th century. Height: 25.5 cm. Width: 15 cm. Slight wear. Provenance : -Estate of Monsieur B, Landes-le-Gaulois. Teacher in Zaire in the 1980s.
