LAWLWA, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Wood, dark brown patina, pigments including kaolin. Male "Mvondo" dance mask depicting an oval, concave human face, characterized by a protruding nose and a mouth shaped like a bird's beak. This mask, with its schematic features, deconstructs the human face and gives it new expressions in line with its use by initiates of the "Ngongo" society during male initiation ceremonies. Validated by Pierre Dartevelle's experienced eye, this mask was also used to appease ancestral spirits for the well-being of the community. Height: 29 cm. Width: 20.5 cm. Restoration (mouth), abrasions. Provenance: -English private collection. -Pierre Dartevelle Collection, Brussels (Attestation signed by Pierre Dartevelle dated December 19, 2019). -Paul Timmermans Collection, Belgium.
