Written by order of His Excellency the Count of Peyronnet, Keeper of the Seals, & under the direction of Mr. President de Maillier, head of the civil division of the Ministry of Justice. [MANUSCRIT]. Sl [Paris], sd (c. 1825). In-folio of [2] ff. 410 pp. in very fine, generally legible handwriting (about 25 lines per page), with the exception of pp. 386-410 which remain blank, index; with in fine an insert containing a handwritten bifeuillet on vellum, signed by Cambacérès, and giving minutes of a session of the Conseil du sceau des titres dated August 3, 1810, in favor of Montesquiou (inscription of 100,000 francs of annuity on the ledger of the public debt). Green morocco, ornate smooth spine, inscription "Chancellerie de France" in gilt lettering in the center of the upper board, gilt edges (period binding). A very important compilation for the internal use of the Chancellery, on the then still recent subject of Civil Status, all the more necessary as no recent printed manual existed at the time. It follows, article by article, the provisions of the 1804 Civil Code, and supplements them with subsequent acts that explain or modify them. Its exact dating is not easy to determine, as Peyronnet was in charge of the Seals from December 1821 to January 1828, and President Mailliet was still listed in the Almanach royal of 1830 as head of the Chancellery's civil service. However, as the last legal or jurisprudential provisions cited date from the end of 1823, it is reasonable to assume that the collection was composed between 1824 and 1825. Copy of Elisabeth-Pierre de Montesquiou-Fezensac (1764-1834), former Grand Chamberlain of France under Napoleon and Peer of France, with large (21.5 x 16.5 cm) and handsome armorial bookplate vignette, pasted on the first flyleaves. It apparently belonged later or earlier to the library of President de Maillier, mentioned in the title (director of the civil section of the Chancellery), with ex-libris vignette pasted on the first endpapers. A fine copy.

First French edition of this unusual work, which closely follows the Latin original (1642-1643). Bound with, by the same author: Les Seaux des comtes de Flandre et inscriptions des chartres par eux publiées (...).Bruges, Jean-Baptiste & Lucas Vanden Kerchove, 1641, [1] bl. f., [14] ff.,112 pp. (reproductions of seals, genealogical trees, with a map included in the pagination), 209 pp., [29] pp. This additional title has been bound between the first part and the Proofs of the main title.
