Description

FRANCISCO RIBA-ROVIRA (Barcelona, 1913-Paris, 2002). "Urban view". Pencil drawing on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. It does not preserve the glass. Measurements: 63 x 48 cm; 78 x 65 cm (frame). Formed in the Superior School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, Francisco Riba-Rovira began to harvest successes with his painting a couple of months before the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. His opposition to Franco forced him to go into exile in France, where he was persecuted and imprisoned by the Gestapo during the German occupation. During his years in Paris he met Gertrude Stein, who introduced him to Picasso and introduced him to her circle of friends. Because of their relationship, Riba-Rovira made a portrait of Gertrude Stein that appears in the catalog, with a foreword by Gertrude Stein, for the Roquepine Gallerie exhibition in 1945. His style fits into the so-called "Modern School of Paris". According to Petisné-Giresse, in many of Riba-Rovira's figures we find a hieratism evocative of El Greco, and, "on the contrary, everything is animated in the landscapes. The whole is orchestrated in a kind of baroque ballet. The trees, the water of the river participate in the concert". He also worked an essential cubism. Throughout his career he exhibited at the Salons d'Automne and the Salons des Indépendants, at the Cincinnati Art Museum and in New York, among other important cities.
