GUILLERMO VARGAS RUIZ (Bollullos de la Mitación, Seville, 1910 - Madrid, 1990). "Garden (El Retiro)", 1983. Oil on táblex. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. It has some flaws in the frame. Measurements: 16 x 27 cm; 31 x 42 cm (frame). Vargas Ruiz was a painter and engraver. He began his training at the School of Arts and Crafts of Seville, to complete his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he entered in 1934. He broadened his knowledge in the United States, thanks to a pension from the Diputación de Sevilla. In 1969 he was appointed professor at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he had been teaching since 1964. He held several exhibitions in Madrid, Bilbao, Cordoba, Seville, Salamanca, Valladolid, Barcelona and Valencia. In 1945 he was awarded the prize for painting in the National Competitions. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded the third medal in 1948 and the second in 1952. In 1960 he was awarded the prize of the Diputación de Sevilla, in 1961 the gold medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, in 1962 the prize of the Diputación de La Coruña, in 1964 the pension of the Fundación March, and in 1972 the medal of honor of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría, in the Autumn Exhibition of Seville. He is represented in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid, the Provincial Museums of Jaén, Huelva and La Coruña, the Municipal Museum of Madrid, the Provincial Council of Navarra, the Provincial Council of Seville and the Camón Aznar Museum of Zaragoza, among other centers.
