Description

Italian school, first third of the 20th century. After ANTOINE BOUVARD (Paris, 1870-1955). "Venice".1927. Oil on canvas. Signed "Fortessi-Zoarraffe" and dated. It has two patches on the back. Measurements: 54 x 37 cm; 63 x 46 cm (frame). This painting is inspired by a Venetian view by Antoine Bouvard. In it a peaceful corner of the city appears represented, offering an original framing and far from the postcard views to which we are accustomed to the Venetian "veduti". The canal runs silently between narrow streets with brick walls, connected by a small iron bridge. The yellowish whitewash and tile tones dominate the facades, reverberating on the blue of the water and intermingling with it. Antoine Bouvard studied in Paris and was influenced by the well-known French artist Félix Ziem. After completing his studies, he went to the south of France, where he painted several landscapes. He later moved to Venice, where he spent most of his life. He is best known for his numerous views of Venice and its canals. He sometimes painted under the name Marc Aldine. His paintings are in collections around the world, including in Japan and the United States. Bouvard had a son, Noel Bouvard, who also painted views of Venice, born in 1912.
