Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887-1938) Portrait of Ashkhen Manucharovna Melikova Sanguine and black pencil on paper. Faded Cyrillic inscriptions: "..." / ... (To my dear /friend Ashkhen/ in remembrance/ ...) lower right. Slight edge loss, paper insolate. 45.5 x 35.5 cm Ashkhen Manucharovna Melikova was a friend of Georgian princess Salomé Nikolaevna Andronikova, a Silver Age muse of remarkable beauty and an inspiration to many poets and artists, including Anna Akhmatova, Ossip Mandelstam, Savely Sorine, Boris Grigorieff, Vassili Choukhaieff... A close friend of the two in Paris, Alexandre Iacovleff produced an oil composition in the early 1920s entitled Three Women, the third woman at the top of the stairs presumably being Vera Choukhaieff. The painting has yet to be located. Here, in this preparatory sanguine for the oil painting Trois femmes, we are drawn in by Ashkhen's deep gaze and beautiful face. Once deciphered, the Cyrillic inscriptions "A ma chère amie Ashkhen en souvenir ..." (To my dear friend Ashkhen in memory ...), testify to Alexander Iacovleff's complicity with his model. Boris Grigorieff also painted a strikingly modern portrait of Ashkhen, Femme aux yeux noirs, in Paris in 1921. A certificate of authenticity from Mme Caroline Haardt de La Baume, an expert in the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, will be given to the buyer. Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887-1938) Ouled-Gopo (Fort-Lamy) Arab woman Pastel on paper pasted on cardboard. Signed in Latin, localized and titled lower right AIacovleff/ Fort Lamy/ Femme arabe/ Ouled Gopo. On verso, handwritten label in black ink Mr Raynaud/ 52 av de Saxe/ 125 bis. 65.8 x 49.7 cm During the Croisière Noire, the shores of Lake Chad became impassable due to heavy flooding. The explorers circumnavigated the great lake to the capital Fort-Lamy, where the expedition stopped for a few days to overhaul the autochenilles and celebrate Christmas. During this stopover, Alexandre Iacovleff devotes no fewer than twelve portraits to the inhabitants of Fort-Lamy. The women have a particular grace, "with their high waists, long muscles, languid gait and almond-shaped eyes" (G.M. Haardt, L. Audouin-Dubreuil, La Croisière Noire, Editions Plon, 1927). Here, the large blue loincloth, skilfully tied over the shoulder, emphasizes the elegance and allure of this beautiful Ouled-Gopo woman with her fine face. This magnificent portrait was presented as number 125 (as evidenced by the number on the reverse of the work) under the name Femme arabe Ouled-Gopo (Fort-Lamy) in the catalog for the exhibition Alexandre Iacovleff, Peintre attaché à l'expédition Citroën Centre Afrique, Dessins et Peintures from May 7 to 23, 1926, at Jean Charpentier's hotel. A certificate of authenticity from Mme Caroline Haardt de La Baume, expert in the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, will be given to the buyer. Signed in Latin, dated and titled lower right AIacovleff/ 1928/ February 15/ "Eros" 48 x 38.4 cm In 1928, Alexandre Iacovleff accompanied Henri de Rothschild to Ethiopia, where he met the Negus Haile Selassie I, the last emperor of Ethiopia, and painted his portrait. For this expedition, they embarked from Marseille, bound for Port-Saïd and then Djibouti, aboard the Eros, an extraordinary ship built by Henri de Rothschild. This sanguine clearly depicts the ship's captain. A certificate of authenticity from Mme Caroline Haardt de La Baume, an expert in the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, will be provided to the buyer. Signed in Latin and dated lower right AIacovleff/ 1932. 37.2 x 55.3 cm Verso, on the cardboard, handwritten inscriptions in pencil lower left: Sur le fleuve/ à Hué/ Annam/ 1932, and other inscriptions in pencil and red chalk. After the success of the Croisière Noire, Alexandre Iacovleff, once again official painter of the Croisière Jaune (1931-1932), travels throughout Asia, from Lebanon to China. The return leg of this epic journey took in Annam (now Vietnam). The artist was particularly charmed by the city of Hué, the former imperial capital, through which the "Perfume River" flows. Here, he produced a number of serene compositions depicting daily life on the river and in the rice fields, as seen in this lovely oil painting. A certificate of authenticity from Mme Caroline Haardt de La Baume, an expert in the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, will be given to the buyer.
