"The child with the hoop, with his fixed gaze, as if posing for a photographer's lens, is present on several canvases. This child - a chair transformed into a child, if not the other way around, like the bread carrier - certainly has a secret, but Coutaud doesn't reveal it to us. It's only much later that we'll find the two photographs of him, at the age of three, in which we see him posing in the same attitude, with a hoop and a stick". Jean Binder, Lucien Coutaud. L'envers du surréalisme, ALC, 2018. We would like to thank Mr. Jean Binder for the information he provided.
