AN AMUSING FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN TRICK CUP, c. 1900s AN AMUSING FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN TRICK CUP, c. 1900s China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912). The deep sides rising from a short foot to a straight rim, painted in polychrome enamels, iron-red, and gilt. The interior centered by a figure of a bearded scholar dressed in a tangerine and pink robe, resting in a beehive cup with a yellow and blue colored ruyi band around the rim, the exterior of the outer cup finely painted depicting a mountain and river landscape with pavilions and boats. The recessed base with an apocryphal six-character Qianlong reign mark. Condition: Good condition, some wear to the gilt, light surface scratches, minor nibbling, and manufacturing flaws. Provenance: USA trade. Weight: 161.1 g Dimensions: Height 8.8 cm This type of cup is also known as ‘surprise cup’, as the figure floats when liquid is introduced to the cup.
