A SILK BROCADE ‘PHOENIX’ JIMBAORI (ARMOR SURCOAT) A SILK BROCADE ‘PHOENIX’ JIMBAORI (ARMOR SURCOAT) Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The surcoat of silk brocade decorated with cranes and phoenixes interspersed with blossoms and brocade patterns, all above beige ground. The lining of creamy white silk with floral roundels, and the lapels covered in a stiffer silk material depicting a pattern of cranes alternating with fans and blossoms on a black ground. HEIGHT 81 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little browning, and few small stains. The jinbaori was originally a simple tunic worn over armor as protection against the weather. From the 1500s samurai generals wore increasingly decorative armor and tunics to show their status and taste.
