A SILK BROCADE ‘PHOENIX’ JIMBAORI (ARMOR SURCOAT) A SILK BROCADE ‘PHOENIX’ JIMBAORI (ARMOR SURCOAT) Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The surcoat of silk brocade decorated with cranes and phoenixes interspersed with blossoms and brocade patterns, all above beige ground. The lining of creamy white silk with floral roundels, and the lapels covered in a stiffer silk material depicting a pattern of cranes alternating with fans and blossoms on a black ground. HEIGHT 81 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little browning, and few small stains. The jinbaori was originally a simple tunic worn over armor as protection against the weather. From the 1500s samurai generals wore increasingly decorative armor and tunics to show their status and taste.

The creamy-white silk satin embroidered in silk stitch with three roundels to the front and back enclosing a dragons and phoenixes chasing magic pearls, surrounded by floral sprays, the hems in black with butterflies amid blossoms, and the sleeve bands decorated in Beijing knot with auspicious symbols. Provenance: Hungarian private collection. Condition: Good condition with some wear, tears at the hems, few loose threads, open seams, minor losses, color bleed, and stains. Dimensions: Length 99.5 cm, Width 128 cm (across sleeves)
