Vertical o-tanzaku. Signed Koson with seal Koson; publisher Daikokuya. Titled Two Wild Geese Flying over Snowy Landscape. Two white-fronted geese in flight in a snow-covered landscape. Stalks of Bamboo frame the design on the left, imparting a sense of depth. The white-fronted Goose was among Koson's favorite subject for prints. Image SIZE 36 x 19 cm, SIZE incl. frame 48.6 x 32.8 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and slight browning of paper. Good impression and colors. Trimmed margins and minor creasing to the bottom-left corner. Mounted on a paper with tape to the top, behind a passepartout. Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement. He is famous as a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower) designs. Throughout a prolific career, in which he created around 500 prints, he went by three different titles: Ohara Hoson, Ohara Shoson, and Ohara Koson. Museum comparison: A closely related print, with similar seals, is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number RES.51.138.

Hundreds of copper-engraved coats of arms of various sizes, including double-page spreads, with emblems of kings, queens and emperors depicting, within rich frames, a wide variety of subjects: animals, birds, plants, sun , stars, etc. Some branches are signed Nelli, Zenoi and Padovano and the remainder attributed to both Giacomo Franco and Girolamo Porro. The aesthetics of the engravings echo the great principles of Baroque art: movement, swirling, emphasis and the use of astonishing images. This Counter-Reformation imagery contrasts with the simplicity of the Reformed religion. As a result, the work had a considerable impact, and was copied extensively in both emblematas and decorative art.
