Follower of Jacques d'ARTOIS (1613-1686) Riders in a landscape Panel 25.5 x 35.5 cm Old collection number on back: N° 31 The taste for landscapes in the manner of Jan Brueghel de Velours, with their fresh polychromy, their picturesque animation of small, motley characters, was preserved well into the 18th century, so that around 1750, Flemish scenes were still being painted in costumes from the time of Rubens! Artists embodied this deliciously nostalgic trend, which also borrowed from David Téniers. These included Joseph van Bredael, Karel Beschey and Théobald Michau. Our painting undoubtedly belongs to the circle of the latter, who maintained the Flemish tradition of the previous century, and was successful enough to be collected by Charles de Lorraine, Governor of the Netherlands.
