Description

RIZZI ZANONI, Antonio (1736-1814). Carta geografica della Sicilia prima, o sia Regno di Napoli. Paris: S.E, 1769. Rizzi Zanoni produced this map on commission from Ferdinando Galliani with the assistance of the government of the Kingdom of Naples; although it lacks astronomical and geodetic foundations, it represents a considerable advance over previous surveys of the area. Engraved by Louis Germain, Perrier, and André Gaspard, it covers the entire territory from Terra di Lavoro to the Straits of Messina and is striking for the sharpness of the engraving, the accuracy of the orographic representation, and the richness of its detail. 4 folding maps, (660 x 470 mm approx.) contained in a contemporary colored cardboard slipcase.
