MACLOT, Jean Charles (1728-1805). Atlas general methodique et elementaire, pour l'etude de la geographie et de l'histoire moderne adapte a toutes les geographies. Paris: Desnos, 1770. Beautiful atlas with contemporary coloring, made for the young cadets of the Royal Military School of Paris. With 7 plates illustrating armillary spheres, 59 world maps including three planispheres, and 15 devoted to the regions of France. Each plate is set in an engraved border and has a printed description applied to each side, usually containing astronomical observations by Tchirikow and Delisle and historical and geographical descriptions by Maclot. Folio, (400 x 305 mm). Double-page engraved title, 66 double-page maps with contemporary coloring within ornate allegorical engraved borders, printed legends applied to the margins, nos. 1-50 comprising world maps (one plate numbered 13 bis) and nos. 1-15 maps of France (complete, plate 23 with light staining, some foxing). Contemporary binding in full calf, spine gilt (some wear and chipping, mainly to joints).
