Italy - [MARRONI (Salvatore)]. [Costumes des environs de Rome & Costumes de la cour papale]. sl, sn, [circa 1840]. 2 vols. large in-8 (25 x 19.2 cm), half-brown morocco, ribbed spines decorated with gilded fillets and fleurons, gilded titles, 34 + 44 plates mounted on tabs and protected by serpents (20th century binding). Albums featuring 65 delightful original watercolors and 13 watercolor engravings, very freshly colored. The plates, unsigned, are captioned in pencil in Italian and French, with the exception of 7 engravings for which the Italian caption is printed. Spines sunned, few small brown spots, bookplate in morocco. These costumes seem to have been inspired by two suites published in Rome by Salvatore Marroni (1790-1872), in the mid-19th century, under the titles Nuova Raccolta di N° 40 costumi popolari di Roma (30 pl.) and Raccolta dei principali Costumi Religiosi e Militari della corte Pontificia (40 pl.). The engravings, however, come from a different edition. The first album, devoted to costumes in the vicinity of Rome, includes 34 original watercolors depicting various trades in the Italian countryside (shepherd, reaper, fisherman, winegrower, salad merchant, etc.) and various regions (Seze, Noreia, Nettuno, Poli, Subiaco, etc.). The second album includes 31 original watercolors and 13 watercolor engravings, depicting the ecclesiastical and military costumes of the papal court: cardinal deacon, bishop in pontifical habit, pope in audience habit, pope in private habit, master of the Holy Office, knight of Malta in full regalia, Swiss sergeant, pope's chasse-mouches, etc. A unique copy featuring a remarkable gallery of Italian costumes. *BOUCHET (Guillaume). Second Livre des Serees de Guillaume Bouchet, sieur de Brocourt. Lyon, Ancelin, 1618. Small in-12 brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). Heads torn off (with half the tail box missing), jaws split, corners dulled. Son of printer and bookseller Jacques I Bouchet, Guillaume Bouchet (c. 1513-1594) was lord of Brocourt (in the commune of Nieuil-l'Espoir) and judge-consul to the merchants of Poitiers. He was one of a small group of poets and literati in Poitiers around the middle of the 16th century, including Jean de La Péruse and Tahureau. He also wrote verse, but with less success than his prose. In addition to his work on falconry (1567), he left a collection full of knowledge and verve, entitled les Serées (soirées), a highly personal work for its playful qualities as well as its abundant erudition. Inspired by Montaigne's Essais, of which Bouchet was a fervent but clumsy admirer, this book is a series of less profound than pleasant reflections on the tricks and bon mots that a few friends are supposed to tell each other to pass the "soirées". Although often heavy-handed, even crude, it was a real success. Three series were published from 1584 onwards, the last posthumously (1598), and reprinted several times. (Wikipedia.)
