[ROME] NOLLI, Giovanni Battista (c.1692-1756). Nuova pianta di Roma. [Rome]:1748. A fine copy of Nolli's famous map of Rome. The work was commissioned by Pope Benedict XIV to produce a census of Rome and to help create the demarcations of the city's fourteen traditional districts. It is by far the most accurate description of Rome produced up to that time, in the golden age of Roman architecture. 19 bifolios, (560 x 380mm). Note to reader and double-page title, 12 double-page topographical maps (5-28), 4 numeric index leaves (1-4) 4 double-page alphabetical index leaves (29-32) from a previous binding, contemporary marginal repairs to maps (light uniform browning) The 2 double-page general maps of modern and ancient Rome by Piranesi and by Bufalini (33-36) are not present.(1)
