CALLOT, Jacques (1592-1635). Vita Beatae Mariae Virginis Matris Dei Emblematibus Delineata. Paris: Langlois, 1646. Scarce complete series (last appearing at auction in 2009) illustrating the life of the Blessed Virgin through emblems, avoiding depicting her directly or using traditional Christian iconography, instead utilizing secular and chivalric symbolism. This is the second state, recognisable by the numbering of the plates and the addition of the 'execudit di F.L.D. Il Ciartres' on the title-page. The first edition, of which there is no trace in sales repertoires, was published by Antoine Charlot in 1628-29. Oblong 8vo (65 x 85mm c.a). Complete set of 26 numbered plates of emblems and engraved title-page, trimmed at the margins and applied to leaves using thin adhesive strips on one side only. Bound in nineteenth-century half calf in eighteenth-century style. (1)
