ZANONI, Giacomo (1615-1682). Rariorum stirpium historia ex parte olim edita. Bologna: Lelio della Fox, 1742. A very good copy of this botanical text devoted mainly to the plants of Malabar (India), illustrated with 185 engraved plates by Giuseppe de Benedetti after drawings by Domenico Maria Fratta. This Latin edition follows the first Italian edition of 1675, which contained only 80 plates, and includes an extensive biography of the author by Gaetano Monti. Zanoni, after whom Linnaeus named the species Zanonia indica (a plant native to New Guinea), was director of the Botanical Garden of Bologna and a specialist in oriental plants. Folio, (340 x 245mm). Engraved allegorical frontispiece with portrait, title-page printed in red and black, 185 engraved plates, in good condition. Contemporary half vellum binding, title lettered to spine in manuscript. Provenance: ownership inscription to title 'This book was given to me Giacomo Benedetto of Bologna by Signore D. Domenico Cesari the year 1831...' (1)
