OKAMURA, Kintaro (1867-1935). Icones of Japanese algae. Tokyo: Kazamashobo, 1907-1942. Scarce and fundamental repertory of Japanese algae of great artistic as well as scientific importance. The care taken by the author in reproducing each specimen in drawings is linked to his bibliophilic passion: Okamura in fact collected, studied and classified educational books from the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa era, leaving a study on the collection of Japanese folk books called Ohraimono. 10 volumes in 7 parts, 4to, (258 x 190mm). Numerous colored engraved plates outside text, very good condition. Contemporary cloth binding in publisher's printed cardboard (some tears to cases). (7)

KANKODO MUNEYOSHI: A PAIR OF BRONZE VASES DEPICTING KINTARO WITH THE MOUNTAIN WITCH AND SAIGYO HOSHI AND MOUNT FUJI KANKODO MUNEYOSHI: A PAIR OF BRONZE VASES DEPICTING KINTARO WITH THE MOUNTAIN WITCH AND SAIGYO HOSHI AND MOUNT FUJI By Kankodo Muneyoshi, signed [Kan]kudo Muneyoshi Japan, late 19 th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Each with a pear-shaped body and a garlic-shaped mouth worked in takabori with gold, silver, and superb iro-e takazogan. The first vase depicting Kintaro seated on the back of a black bear next to the mountain-witch Yama-uba, the golden boy’s companions in the form of a rabbit and a monkey carrying a branch of cherry blossoms, all framed by towering pines and gushing waterfalls. The second vase depicting Saigyo Hoshi riding his horse with an attendant, looking up at mount Fuji as a second samurai blocks his path at the mouth of a rushing waterfall. The neck of both vases inlaid with silver wire in the shape of scrolling clouds, the mouth with floral medallions, and the foot with a silver-wire rinzu band. Each signed to the base [KAN]KUDO MUNEYOSHI in silver wire. HEIGHT each 15.5 cm WEIGHT 711 g & 694 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and a few tiny nicks here and there. A SCROLL PAINTING OF KINTARO, AFTER YOSA BUSON A SCROLL PAINTING OF KINTARO, AFTER YOSA BUSON Japan, 20th century Ink and watercolors on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with stag antler handles. Depicting Kintaro walking barefoot, carrying his familiar axe. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Shain’ 謝寅 and inscribed ‘Taisho ninen’ (‘Year 1913’). SIZE of the sheet 89.5 x 28.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 150 x 43 cm Condition: Wear, soiling, fading, creasing, and folds. Presenting well. Yosa Buson (1716-1784) was born outside Osaka and moved to Edo (Tokyo) to study both painting and haiku. Like his literary hero, Basho, Buson traveled widely through Japan, publishing notes from his journeys under the name Buson. He is known as one of the great haiku masters, and his work is generally regarded as more sensuous. Buson was also influenced by Chinese poetry. In the 1750s, he settled in Kyoto, where he continued his career as a painter and changed his surname to Yosa.
