[PUGLIA]. STAFFA, Giovanni Luca (1622-1682). Relazione della consegna del Sacro Deposito di San Stephen, Trani [1656]. [BOUND WITH:] Ritrovata del corpo di S.Stefano. Trani: Valeri, 1622 [but 1656]. Curious and scarce work printed in Trani reporting three texts concerning the translation of the body of St Stephen (Pope Stephen I) to the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri in Pisa. The version reported here differs from the classical sources in claiming that the Saint's body lay not in Rome, in the Basilica of San Stefano in Capite, but rather outside Trani, at the convent of Santa Maria di Colonna. 4to, (200 x 140 mm). Engraved frontispiece (light spotting and browning, wormtrack from quires G to O not touching text). (1)

Salome with the head of John the Baptist biblical scene, the story tells of Salome, the beautiful daughter of Herodias, who enraptured the guests at one of Herod's parties with her graceful dancing to such an extent that her stepfather Herod swore to fulfil her wish, after consulting with her mother Herodias, she demanded the head of John the Baptist from Herod, as he had made critical remarks about her mother's incestuous union with Herod, Herod reluctantly ordered John's beheading, whereupon John's severed head was presented to the party on a bowl, a well-developed, glazed portrait study in restrained colours, oil on canvas and card, c. 1880, unsigned, wavy ground, in need of minor restoration, framed in gilt stucco molding, rebate dimensions approx. 87 x 56 cm.
